Save Money on Your Next Cruise by Not Taking a Plane to the Port   by Jere Moline

A couple of months ago several of us from Phoenix were planning to cruise the Mexican Riviera on board the NCL Star. Because we are all fans of budget travel we decided to see if we could find a way to save a little money on the trip to the port of embarkation. Some wanted to drive, some wanted to fly and some wanted to try a shuttle service. There was only one thing to do. We went to the phone and started to ask lots of questions.

We decided to try four people to a car so that there would be enough room for luggage. Our fuel expenses would run about $110.00 per car. We allowed $50 for food and then we had to have a place to sleep. After several phone calls and checking the internet, we found the Crown Plaza Hotel in the harbor area. At the hotel they had a program called “Park and Cruise” where you paid for a room and they stored your car in a secure lot while you were on your cruise. They also allowed everyone in your party a hot breakfast and shuttle service to and from the docks. We had four in our party and rented a suite. The price came to $250.00 and we were real happy with the arrangement and left the car stored in the hotel’s lot. We later found that the cost for leaving a car in the lot near the docks was $15.00 per day. For the week of our cruise we saved $105.00 or more just for the storage of the car and the total cost of driving was only about $410.00 with the cost of the hotel included.

We checked with Southwest Airlines and the cost of roundtrip flight was going to run About $166.00 per person. That would have been around $664.00 for the four of us and then there was the cost of getting to and from the airport. We hadn’t had time for a meal on the flight so there may have been the cost of snacks on the way to the docks. Considering the way they feed you on a cruise that probably wouldn’t have mattered to much to anyone.

We made a phone call to a transportation company and found that the trip to Los Angeles for a small group such as ours would cost around $250.00 per person. If our group had been larger we could have gotten a better price but that still didn’t fall in the realm of budget travel. For four people to make the trip in a mini bus it would cost $1000.00 as compared to the $410.00 it cost to drive over in a private car.

In the end we decided to make a pleasant day of it and drive together to LA in a small caravan of three cars. We took our time and did a little sightseeing along the way. It was a wonderful and relaxed way to start our vacation and because we had taken the time to ask a few questions and arm ourselves with the proper information, we were able to save at least $125.00 per person on the very first day. It was very satisfying for a bunch of Budget Travelers.
