Gay Cruise
Gay Lifestyle in Palm Springs by Bill Franklin
When you think about gay friendly cities in the United States, you may not think of Palm Springs as being near the top of the list. The Palm Springs gay community and lifestyle is typically more quiet and reserved compared to that of West Hollywood.
However there are many gay events that occur throughout the year, which help the Palm Springs gay community come alive in full and vibrant colours. Events like the Dinah Shore weekend, Gay Rodeo and Palm Springs Pride weekend allow the gay community to showcase their lifestyle.
Organizations like The Nuera Network Palm Springs, a gay Matchmaking service helps single gay men and women meet someone special.
Palm Springs plays home to a whole host of gay clubs, from The Barracks, a popular local cruise bar, to Confession, a bustling nightclub where well known DJs play your favorite songs all night long.
The Tool Shed is one of the most popular haunts for gay locals, open all week long from 10:00am until 2:00am with a happy hour that lasts from opening right up until 8:00pm. The Tool Shed also hosts regular pool tournaments and weekly underwear only nights every Thursday.
However those of you who prefer a quiet weekend can find an almost overwhelming number of gay friendly Hotels, resorts and bed and breakfasts here in Palm Springs.
The Bacchanal hotel is widely renowned as the best gay resort when it comes to privacy and a cruiser free zone. It is an ideal location for romance, which will come in handy for those of you looking for the perfect weekend away after meeting your match with The Nuera Network, Palm Springs.
When it comes to a dinner date, Palm Springs also has a lot of options, including the bar and grill at the famous Blame It On Midnight entertainment lounge, which boasts a variety of high end dishes, an intimate setting and live performances including singers and pianists.
Besides the lighter side of great entertainment, fun weekends away and beautiful food, Palm Springs is also home to a great number of gay friendly organizations, including the Desert Pride Center, The Leather Order of the Desert, the Palm Spring Bears and the Gay Rodeo.
If events like the Gay Rodeo are not quite your cup of tea, you can also immerse yourself and your newfound date in the drama at McCallum Theatre, the culture at the Palm Springs Art Museum or the incredible Living Desert – presenting a display of local flora and fauna so amazing you can easily lose yourself spending a day here.
Those of you local to the area, or with enough space in your bags to do some shopping, will be thrilled with the vast array of lifestyle clothing available to you at Bear Wear, Dezart, which sells contemporary art created only by artists local to the desert, Pawz, a high end pet pampering boutique and the incredible Gay Mart, which you will find is just like your local Walmart except with cuter clothing designed with gay men and women in mind.
Whether you are in Palm Springs to find a partner or for a romantic getaway with your loved one, it is the perfect destination for new and old couples alike to experience the wonders of the desert in luxury, and feel totally at home in a community that embraces people of all color, creed and sexual orientation.

All Aboard: Rosie’s Family Cruise $19.98 Entertainer Rosie O’Donnell, her wife, Kelli, and their children set sail for the Bahamas with 500 other gay, lesbian, and transgendered families in this television documentary. All Aboard! Rosie’s Family Cruise goes behind the scenes of the 2004 inaugural voyage of R Family Vacations, a gay travel company founded by the O’Donnells. Interviews with a cross-section of passengers are interspersed with footage of on-ship entertainment (including Broadway-style musical numbers featuring O’Donnell) and on-shore demonstrations by anti-gay activists. The cruise’s passengers include not only gay parents and their adopted and biological children, but also straight parents, siblings, and friends of gay passengers. O’Donnell says the goal in launching her company was to provide vacations with an atmosphere in which same-sex partners and their kids could feel welcome instead of scrutinized. Interview subjects recount tales of other, less queer-friendly vacations, while others give a peek at the realities of gay marriage and adoption. Several longtime couples celebrate weddings and commitment ceremonies, while others meet new friends and, in some cases, sperm donors and surrogate mothers. All Aboard! Rosie’s Family Cruise premiered April 6, 2006, on HBO. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi |

America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It $81 It’s the end of the world as we know it. Someday soon, you might wake up to the call to prayer of a muezzin. Europeans already do. Liberals tell us that ?diversity is our strength??while Talibanic enforcers cruise Greenwich Village burning books and barber shops, while the Supreme Court decides that sharia law doesn?t violate the ?separation of church and state, ? and the Hollywood Left decides to give up on gay rights in favor of the much safer charms of polygamy. If you think this can?t happen, you haven?t been paying attention, as the hilarious and provocative columnist Mark Steyn shows to devastating effect in this, his first book on American and global politics. |

Death Trick $60.67 A young man has been brutally murdered. The gay son of a wealthy family has disappeared. Now it’s up to private dick Don Strachey to get to the bottom of this mess–even if he has to cruise every gay bar in the city to do it! Don Strachey isn’t exactly the most sought-after private eye in Albany, New York. In fact, this gay P.I. has gotten to the point of having to write checks to pay his tab at the cheapest lunch counter in town. And he isn’t sure that the latest one, for the grand total of two dollars and ninety-three cents, is going to clear. Then the phone rings. Billy Blount, the gay heir to one of Saratoga Springs’ upper-crust families, has disappeared, and his parents want him back. On top of that, Billy, a young and outspoken gay activist, is wanted for the grizzly murder of the man he slept with on his last night in Albany–a man he’d never met before that night! Set in the glorious, promiscuous pre-HIV late 1970s, Death Trick: A Murder Mystery is a fast-paced excursion through the seamy underside of gay Albany. From gay discos where the hard-pumping music never stops, to the city’s infamous baths, to the dark alley behind the local precinct house, this hard-bitten private dick searches for answers to the questions that plague Billy’s parents and the police. With his faithful companion (and unfaithful lover) Timmy, plus a cast of characters that includes drag queens, ex-jock gay bar owners, homophobic cops, male hustlers, and wealthy suburbanites, Strachey begins a chase that leads him to seedy gay bars, posh suburban homes, and pricey mental institutions where they use electric shock to destroy sick gay tendencies. |

Fantabulosa $39.95 Polari has been the secret language of gay men and women through the twentieth century. Originally used to conceal and mask, Polari is an ever-changing vocabulary employing words from criminals, prostitutes, and beggars, rhyming slang and back slang, Italian, Yiddish, and French. Today, Polari and gay slang is less a language of concealment and more a language of specialization and attitude used to laugh, bitch, gossip, and cruise. Newly issued in paperback, Fantabulosa is an essential companion to the closeted world of the double entendre and to the outrageous lexicon of contemporary gay and lesbian life. With its comprehensive entries and in-depth, often graphic etymology, readers–whether familiar or unfamiliar with Polari and gay slang–will find the dictionary informative, humorous, and shocking by turns. |

Gay and Lesbian Washington D.C. $13.77 New – In the identity of gay and lesbian America, Washington, D.C., has a history, perhaps unknown, that begs to be acknowledged. This history ranges from the planner of this new city on the Potomac River to generations of gay women who fought, lobbied, and marched for the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Prohibition promoted the rise of underground clubs with back rooms for gays and lesbians to socialize in the 1920s. The history of these clubs and cruise spots reveals the migration of gay n |

Gay and Lesbian Washington D.C. $19.99 In the identity of gay and lesbian America, Washington, D.C., has a history, perhaps unknown, that begs to be acknowledged. This history ranges from the planner of this new city on the Potomac River to generations of gay women who fought, lobbied, and marched for the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Prohibition promoted the rise of underground clubs with back rooms for gays and lesbians to socialize in the 1920s. The history of these clubs and cruise spots reveals the migration of gay neighborhoods across the city, from Georgetown to Lafayette Square to Dupont Circle. In the 1960s and 1970s, gays and lesbians marched with Pride to be recognized. In the 1980s, they covered the Mall with a quilt to finally hear politicians utter the word AIDS. Today, the word is marriage: equal under the law and equal in the heart. |

Island of Mending Hearts $6.05 Suicide is like masturbation; they both like to veil their obscenity with metaphor, using the back doors of language to introduce their unacceptable intent. So I wasn’t going to kill myself; I just wanted to end it all. Straight, 40-something Michael plans to throw himself from a cruise ship, but instead procrastinates his suicide all the way to the gay mecca of Key West. Once onshore, he finds, first, a city with a fascinating history; second, a series of brutal and anonymous sexual encounters; and, finally and surprisingly, a cast of interesting new friends, both male and female-including the beautiful Alex-who eventually help Michael adjust to his new gay self. This is intelligent, accessible writing about how one man comes to terms with himself; a life-affirming novel which deals with the wider meaning of community -social, sexual, racial. Subplots are based on geography, art and architecture, and explore the history and heritage of Key West, as well as expanding on the novel’s central metaphor of the palimpsest. For Michael, like the -palimpsest itself, is a man with two stories, and a man who risks having one story erased to make room for the next. A rich and complex emotional journey. -Patrick GaleTim Ashley lives in London. The Island of Mending Hearts is his first novel. |

Queer Constellations: Subcultural Space in the Wake of the City $63.81 Queer Constellations investigates the dreams and catastrophes of recent urban history viewed through new queer narratives of inner-city life. The gay village, gay mecca, gai Paris, the lesbian flaneur, the lesbian boheme –these and other urban phantasmagoria feature paradoxically in this volume as figures of revolutionary utopia and commodity spectacle, as fossilized archetypes of social transformation and ruins of haunting cultural potential. Dianne Chisholm introduces readers to new practices of walking, seeing, citing, and remembering the city in works by Neil Bartlett, Samuel Delany, Robert Gluck, Alan Hollinghurst, Gary Indiana, Eileen Myles, Sarah Schulman, Edmund White, and David Wojnarowicz. Reading these authors with reference to the history, sociology, geography, and philosophy of space, particularly to the everyday avant-garde production and practice of urban space, Chisholm reveals how–and how effectively–queer narrative documentary resembles and reassembles Walter Benjamin’s constellations of Paris, capital of the nineteenth century. Considering experimental queer writing in critical conjunction with Benjamin’s city writing, the book shows how a queer perspective on inner-city reality exposes contradictions otherwise obscured by mythic narratives of progress. If Benjamin regards the Paris arcade as a microcosm of high capitalism, wherein the (un)making of industrial society is perceived retrospectively, in contemporary queer narrative we see the sexually charged and commodity-entranced space of the gay bathhouse as a microcosm of late capitalism and as an exemplary site for excavating the contradictions of mass sex. In Chisholm’s book we discover how, looking back on the ruins of queer mecca, queer authors return to Benjamin to advance his dialectics of seeing ; how they cruise the paradoxes of market capital, blasting a queer era out of the homogeneous course of history. |

USED: All Aboard: Rosie’s Family Cruise $7.99 Entertainer Rosie O’Donnell, her wife, Kelli, and their children set sail for the Bahamas with 500 other gay, lesbian, and transgendered families in this television documentary.

USED: Boat Trip [WS] $3.99 Two guys looking for a respite from their bumpy romantic lives find themselves in the midst of a very confusing situation in this broad comedy. Jerry (Cuba Gooding Jr.) is a guy who thinks he’s found the love of his life in Felicia (Vivica A. Fox), his beautiful longtime girlfriend. Jerry decides to propose to Felicia, and arranges for a hot-air balloon ride in order to create the ideal setting to pop the question. However, Felicia not only turns him down, she announces that she’s leaving him for another man. Jerry sinks into a deep depression, until his best friend Nick (Horatio Sanz), who has been having his own romantic problems, suggests they take a vacation cruise on an ocean liner, forgetting their troubles while they make time with bikini-clad babes. Jerry is game, but after an angry misunderstanding with a travel agent, Nick and Jerry discover they’ve been booked on a tour specifically for gay men. Jerry and Nick are forced to pose as lovers to ward off the indefatigable advances of aging playboy Lloyd (Roger Moore), which cramps their style when the ship’s captain rescues a boatload of buxom Swedish swimsuit models. Jerry’s spirits rise when he meets Gabriella (Roselyn Sanchez), a beautiful dancer who is part of the ship’s entertainment staff. Jerry, however, now has to walk a fine line between maintaining his cover and convincing Gabriella that despite outward appearances, he’s not gay. Boat Trip was the first feature film from director Mort Nathan, best known for his work as a writer for television. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

USED: Homo Heights $19.99 Sara Moore made her directorial debut with this campy comedy, issuing a barrage of bitchy bits in a surreal send-up of homosexual histrionics, starring noted activist-author-actor Quentin Crisp, who previously portrayed Queen Elizabeth in Orlando. The aging, gay guru Malcolm (Crisp), aka the “Greta Garbo of Queerdom,” has a cinema memorabilia collection (Vivien Leigh’s pillbox, Gloria Swanson’s false teeth, Nancy Sinatra’s boot trinkets) given him by Homo Heights gay mafia head, the exuberant, ebullient drag queen Maria Callous (Stephen Sorrentino), a media manipulator who keeps tab on the public pulse by bugging apartment complexes. Stifled by the controlling Callous, Malcolm wants out and plots an escape with his friend, gay gal cabdriver Clementine (Lea DeLaria). The outrageous and furious Callous, however, intends to make Malcolm happy again with “an icon for an icon,” and she gathers a gang of gay ghetto leaders for a meeting. They reject Hayley and Juliet Mills, and Grace Jones, before choosing the perfect icon — Carol Channing (seen in a brief cameo). As for Clementine’s lost love Stella (Lynn Sain), the lesbian said the better, since Stella left Clementine for the alcoholic Blanche (Michelle Hutchinson), and Clementine would like to pour Blanche back into the bottle to win back Stella. Further, Stella is now pregnant by tomcat Cruise (Tim Tucker), whose boyfriend, journalistic jackdaw Tootsie (Grant Richey), is hatching a plan to outline Malcolm’s escape attempts in an investigative expos? that could soon spur Callous into fierce fulminations. Drag queens Queenie (Emil Herrera) and Paprika (Daniel Alexander Jones) spice up the subplots. Shown at the 1998 Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide |

USED: MORE TALES OF THE CIT-DVD $19.99 Armistead Maupin calls the three-story wooden house at 28 Barbary Lane in San Francisco “my homestead, my Tara.” He began his portrait of Barbary Lane life during the ’70s in a daily newspaper serial, expanding the material into a series of six novels. PBS aired the original TV miniseries in 1994, but threats and pressures prompted PBS to drop their plans for a follow-up, leaving an unresolved cliffhanger for four years. Several members of the original PBS cast were reunited for this six-part Showtime sequel (adapted from Maupin’s second novel in the series), set in San Francisco of 1977. It picks up the threads of the story six weeks after the point where the PBS miniseries ended. When Mary Ann Singleton (Laura Linney), hoping for romance, and her cynical gay friend Michael (Paul Hopkins) take a Mexican cruise, Mary Ann meets amnesia victim Burke Andrew (Colin Ferguson) and Michael runs into his former lover, Dr. Jon Fielding (William Campbell). Michael’s roommate Mona Ramsey (Nina Siemaszko), in a purple haze of pot and angel dust, answers phones at a Reno brothel owned by Mother Mucca (Jackie Burroughs). Mona learns about her lineage and also about Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis), the former Mr. Madrigal. Rich widow Frannie (Diana LeBlanc) finds a cure for her depression at the rural resort Pinus, where society ladies celebrate their 60th birthdays with youthful houseboys. Beauchamp Day (Thomas Gibson) is married to Frannie’s pregnant daughter DeDe (Barbara Garrick), but Beauchamp isn’t the father. Locations include San Francisco, Montreal (substituting for some areas of San Francisco), and Zihuatanejo, Mexico. Premiered June 7, 1998 on Showtime. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide |

USED: Margaret Cho: I’m the One That I Want $5.99 Survivor of sitcom hell, whipping girl for the Hollywood caste system, self-described slut, unabashed fag hag, and, above all, fabulously funny comedienne, Margaret Cho is a legend unto herself. In 1994, Cho, a veteran of the stand-up circuit, was tapped to star in her own sitcom, All-American Girl. The ensuing insanity that came with Cho’s stardom — eating disorders, alcohol and drug problems — taught her a hard lesson in Hollywood politics and the price of being cast as a role model for an entire ethnic group. Fortunately, Cho was able to overcome a number of obstacles to regain her sanity; even more fortuitously for her fans, she turned her experiences into the basis for her one-woman show, “I’m The One That I Want.” The show, which proved enormously successful, included observations on everything from Hollywood hypocrisy, Cho’s Korean mother, gay bars, doing a gig on a lesbian whale-watching cruise in Alaska, and why straight male porn actors tend to be so incredibly ugly. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide |

USED: Young Soul Rebels $14.99 This largely character-driven thriller-drama is the feature-film debut of British documentary filmmaker Isaac Julien, and provides viewers with an insider’s look at the diverse lifestyles of hip, young black immigrants who lived upon the fringes of 1977 London society. The film begins in a colorful park setting where, in the late-night hours, gay men cruise. A stabbing occurs and unbeknownst to the killer, a passerby has recorded it on cassette. The story then jumps to two young aspiring DJs, the heterosexual and flamboyant Chris and his best friend, the gay and rather reserved Caz, as they defiantly broadcast soul music from their ragtag, rolling pirate radio station. With their “Soul Patrol,” the two symbolically thumb their noses at the conservative BBC that dominates the airwaves. The murder victim is a friend of Caz, and he becomes a prime suspect in the case. Unbeknownst to him, someone has dropped by the cassette tape with the evidence that will save him. At the same time, his friendship with Chris becomes strained when it becomes obvious that both young men are on the cusp of heading in dramatically different life directions. Caz has been getting increasingly involved with the politics and wildness of the fledgling punk-rock movement, while normally wild Chris has been offered a lucrative contract to work as a DJ at a major, mainstream radio station by his new girlfriend Tracy, a production assistant there. Still, the two try to somehow prepare to co-host a concert protesting the upcoming Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebration. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi |
